Something about our walk with Tarn seemed to disturb Laicer. His face was bunched, words short. When we reached the house, I pulled him alongside.

“Larani said there were bathing pools,” I said, but his gaze stayed unfocused.

What was wrong? Why was he so tense?

“C’mon.” I took his hand, tugging gently, until he blinked.

“Back with me?” I smiled and squeezed his fingers. “Let’s go explore.”

Behind the house, there were a number of pools surrounded by a wall. I wondered if they had been blasted by xyran stones. I swished my hand through the closer one. “Oo. That’s warm.”

The other was cold. Might be refreshing later, but not now.

“Ready for some hot tubbing?”

Laicer frowned. “That’s not a phrase I understand.”

“You will in just a moment.” I unlaced my new top and pulled it over my head.

Suddenly, he was very, very attentive as I slipped out of my boots and pants.

“Tell me more about this hot tubbing,” he said.

I moved right up to him. “Wait!” He stepped back, startled. “What are you doing?”

“Do you mind?” I looked up at him from beneath my lashes.

His hands fell to his side, breathing becoming ragged. “Do as you will.”

Quickly, I pressed a kiss against his chest, then I pulled the belt free, his leather kilt dropping.

The stripes continued everywhere. I could handle that.

What I wasn’t sure about was those… were they rings? It looked like a series of concentric rings, starting at the base of his cock, getting smaller towards the tip.

My hands were tiny against the breadth of his shoulders, but still, I tried to dig in. Bit by bit, the knots in his shoulders loosened, and he relaxed against me.

Finally, he sighed. “That’s nice. Thank you.”

“What’s on your mind, babe?” I asked, then kicked myself.

Tension returned to his back, down the long muscles at either side of his spine, like he was coiled up to spring.

“These Grelles. They mate and have young like animals,” he finally said. “It unnerves me.”

“That’s not just something that animals do,” I murmured. “You remember me telling you about Sarah, about Kyla?”

“But kits,” he said. “Children, so small. It hadn’t occurred to me… Or perhaps my brain merely pushed such an outlandish idea aside. Reavers come from the generators.
